Physocarpus opulifolius / Eastern ninebark

This beautiful, upright, deciduous shrub has unique exfoliating bark that peels in strips to reveal layers (hence the name ninebark) of reddish-light brown inner bark. Eastern ninebark provides a year-round stream of food and habitat for local wildlife, including miner and leaf-cutter bees, the Ninebark Pygmy Moth, songbirds and overwintering insects.

Per University of Maryland Extension: "For the best ecological benefits, it is highly recommended to plant the "straight species" (green-leafed ninebark). Research has shown that red or purple-leafed cultivars (like "Diabolo") do not support as many native caterpillars."

Note: Plants may be cut close to the ground in early Spring to rejuvenate. Ninebark will live its best life when protected from deer.
