Baptisia Australis / Blue false indigo

A slow-to-establish, upright perennial with spikes of matte purple flowers rising above matte green leaves and with a deep taproot system that should not be disturbed once established. Listed as threatened status in Maryland, blue false indigo is an important mid-Spring nectar source and a larval host plant for the Wild Indigo Duskywing. A food source for caterpillars and birds, the seed pods have ornamental interest through winter.

Deer- and drought-resistant.
